Fruitful Life

Fruitful Life

lavenderLast Saturday morning, Sonja and I and 300-plus people donning red polo shirts and buzzing with excitement squeezed into a not-quite-big-enough cabin at D. Gary Young’s lavender, melissa and tansy farm in St. Maries, Idaho. In these cozy quarters I began meeting people from all over the world … a man from Czech Republic, a woman from Australia, a couple from the UK. Beautiful faces of seemingly every race and tongue had traveled from Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South America, and beyond – their unique voices and languages joining together to create a roar of energy and anticipation that bounced off the timber beams like rubber balls.

This was farm day for the 2014 Young Living Silver Retreat, a reward for distributors who had achieved the rank of Silver in the past year.

I was eager to hear from Dr. Young on his home turf. Having grown up farming and logging in the mountains of Challis, Idaho, Gary began to discover a passion for growing plants to produce his own essential oils. Cramming in with this eager group of oilers was no big deal for Gary, who was raised in a 30×30-foot log cabin without running water and electricity. To him, this was home and his relaxed countenance and attitude set everyone at ease.

His smile was ear to ear as he began addressing current challenges and exciting developments in and around his farms and seeds and oils and dirt – the things he is most passionate about. He went into detail about dreams he had some twenty some years ago that planted this vision in his heart. He humbly shared his gratitude for how this vision has grown from a 1/8-acre test-plot of ground in Spokane to thousands of acres under cultivation in Mona, Utah; Simiane La–Rotonde, France; St. Maries and Naples, Idaho; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Salalah, Oman; and his newest farms in Peru and Canada.

Then, in mid-sentence, he paused, his face moving slowly downward. Silence filled the room as his face strained and tears filled his eyes. Struggling for words, he fought to continue through trembling lips.

“I’ll tell you what makes all of this possible. I listen to the Father … and I speak to Him just like I speak to you. I tell Him about my dreams … and He shows me what they mean. He gives me crazy ideas and I trust in Him. I believe that this is why Christ came to the earth … to make a way for us to have relationship with the Father. This is how I live my life. He wants to partner with us because He loves us and loves being with us … I don’t mean to offend anyone, but this is my life.”

All across the room hands were busy wiping away tears and reaching for tissue. Gratitude and awe permeated the room like dense morning fog. Sniffles and sighs were the only sounds breaking the silence in this holy moment.

In this deep place of peace that only His Presence creates, I heard a voice and verse:

I am the Vine itself, you are the branches. It is the man who shares my life and whose life I share who proves fruitful. – John 15:5 (JB Phillips translation).
