How To Use Oils

howtouseoils

Why do we feel so darn confident rubbing oils on our children, taking them internally and diffusing them throughout our homes? Well … PURITY IS A BIG DEAL! Young Living is the only company who owns their own farms and therefore maintains complete control over the process from seed to seal.

What does “Seed to Seal” mean?

In a nutshell, “Seed to Seal” means “better than certified organic.” Incredible care is taken every step of the way – from the moment the seed is placed into the ground until the pure distilled oils are sealed in bottles, ensuring that these oils are the pure essence of the plant. Purity and potency is everything!

Ok, So how do I get started?

Now that you are ready to jump into the Joyful Vida lifestyle, you might be wondering, how do I begin? I remember when I started using the oils. I was afraid I would do it “wrong” and was feeling very overwhelmed. But soon I realized that I could relax and take it one step at a time. There’s no pressure because there’s no one, perfect way to do it. One great way to begin is by starting with the oils from the premium starter kit – the “Everyday Oils”. These ten oils are very popular and useful oils. So have fun getting to know these, you really can’t mess it up! The great thing about the oils is they are not toxic which is a great feature for peace of mind!

It might feel really strange when you begin … but hang in there. Commit to the process of learning and you will be so glad you did! Here are a few helpful tips to moving forward and effectively using your Joyful oils.

Inhale:

within 18-22 seconds oils hit every cell in your body. Oils positively effect emotions because smell is directly linked to the limbic system in your brain. This is why Joy oil seriously uplifts your mood and makes you happy :) So smell away and get happy! Diffusers work great too.

joyfulvida_smellTopical Application:

Within 22 minutes these amazin’ oils hit every cell in your body! Put a drop or two in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and rub it on the bottom of your feet, or where it hurts. If you want, you can dilute with pure coconut oil or olive oil. Don’t forget to take a big whiff of your oily hands before you rub it in – there’s great benefits to doing this! :)

Internally:

Put the oils in a capsule or under your tongue for rapid absorption.  You can order capsules from Young Living. One drop under your tongue is comparable to 5 drops in a capsule. I’m not gonna lie…some of the oils don’t taste the best. I love to put Lemon oil and Peppermint in my water. (FREE tip: use glass not plastic. Plastics are full of toxins and oils will begin breaking down the toxins in the plastic. Plastic is no bueno). Read the Young Living bottles for more info on how to ingest. Some oils are better than others when it comes to ingesting. The only Young Living oils I would shy away from ingesting are Jasmine, Neroli & Onycha. These three oils are actually absolutes(fragrances) or essences rather than essential oils.

Here’s some more “good to know” info:

A few oils are “hot” to the skin and work best topically when diluted. (Oregano, Cinnamon Bark, Lemongrass, Thyme, etc) These powerful oils can make your skin feel uncomfortable and irritated if applied non-diluted. If you ever experience this, just grab some pure coconut oil or olive oil and rub it on where it hurts and bam the burning sensation is gone. Test a small amount on your skin first.

Can you be allergic to essential oils?

Nope! That’s right, as long as we are talking  about Young Living steam distilled oils (purity again is the key) you are safe! Here’s why…

“There has never been a documented instance of an anti-body response (i.e. sensitization) to an essential oil.Essential oil antibodies have never been found or detected in anyone. Unless sensitization occurs and antibodies are produced and stored in the body, there can be no allergic reaction. Therefore, we can state unequivocally that essential oils are not and cannot be allergens. Sometimes people do have allergy-like reactions but these are not allergenic in nature. They are detox reactions.”:  Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple by Dr. David Stewart

Are there exceptions?

Yes. By definition, a true essential oil must be steam distilled, not expressed. It is possible to have an allergic reaction to Citrus oils, as they are cold-pressed from the rind, not steam distilled. While we refer to citrus oils such as orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit as “essential oils,” strictly speaking they are not. By definition, a true essential oil must be steam distilled, not expressed.

There are also oils extracted by solvents such as onycha, jasmine, and neroli. Strictly speaking, they too are not true essential oils. Technically, they should be called absolutes, not essential oils. One can have a true allergic reaction to these because, like the citrus oils, they have not passed through a distillation process and can contain traces of proteins, peptides, or amino acids.

Because of the nature of distillation by heat, steam, and water, that true essential oils must undergo, they do not contain the necessary compounds to trigger allergies because these compounds do not pass through the distillation process.

Signs of Detox (a good thing) : Skin rashes, nausea, headaches, fatigue. Hang in there…this will pass :) Just decrease the oil amount, dilute and put on the bottom of your feet if you feel you are detoxing too fast.  Be aware that many personal care products that we use on our skin have toxic chemicals in them (GROSS). Read your labels and stay away from products containing sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate & Propylene Glycol. They are not good for you.

Photosensitivity: a few oils react with sunlight meaning they should not be used on your skin prior to sun exposure. Avoid putting citrus oils, bergamot, angelica, joy oil on prior to sun exposure as it could lead to pigmentation changes, rashes or cause your skin to burn.
